Biography
From candidate website
Born to Lawrence and Helen Wells, I was raised in Barron, Wisconsin. My father, a World War II Navy Veteran, farmed and worked as a custodian at the Barron County Campus in Rice Lake. My mother was a public school teacher, first teaching in a one-room school house and then instructing first graders at Woodland Elementary School in Barron. My mother took an early retirement to care for my father as he suffered from Multiple Sclerosis. Her sacrificial love is just one example of the values I have been taught, try to encourage, and hope to help maintain.
I’ve been elected Barron County’s Clerk of Circuit Court for nine terms. As clerk, I oversee an office of eight staff members and provide administrative support to three circuit court branches. Foremost in my mind has been the fact that fellow citizens’ dollars are used to fund the court system, and therefore I have consistently stayed within the budget. In fact, over the years Barron County’s Circuit Court system has grown from one branch to three, yet over that time the amount of workers in the Clerk of Circuit Court office has been streamlined to less employees than originally employed due to my implementation of a computer data base and other time and labor saving initiatives.
In my position as Clerk of Circuit Court, it has been necessary to implement the laws passed by the legislature, yet I was never contacted by a lawmaker to discuss the impact of such enactments. I promise a listening ear to each entity who knows best the impact that legislative regulations cause.
As the treasurer for the Barron Township, I have participated in the implementation of a budget which has steadily limited tax growth. I believe the fiscal responsibility demonstrated in townships is an excellent model for state government.
As Executive Director and a court-appointed guardian with Proguard, Ltd., I saw firsthand the imposed bureaucracy associated with the state government. I pledge to investigate tax-saving, common sense approaches to solve the problems created by the red-tape of government interference.
Prior to my careers in the private sector and in county government, I was a public school teacher, earning my Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. In fact, two generations before me and now one generation after me has been or is currently involved in the field of public education. I feel that this personal experience, together with my observation of my grandchildren as they are homeschooled, uniquely equips me to understand the options available to today’s families who seek the very best system in which to educate their children.
